There’s STI good news and bad news
There’s STI good news: What if there was a shot that protected you against not just HPV but against every virus out there? We aren’t there yet, but some MIT researchers recently made a major leap toward developing one—they’ve invented an across-the-board virus-killer that’s proven safe and effective when tested in mice. It’s got a fittingly space-age name—DRACO—and while it’s a long way from being a marketable drug, it sounds like a step in the right direction.
And STI bad news: Could gonorrhea be the next superbug? Researchers in Japan have identified an antibiotic-resistant strain of the infection. So far, there have been no reported cases of this strain anywhere else, but the CDC has noticed that higher doses of medicine are needed to treat some cases of gonorrhea in the U.S., which could be a sign of growing drug resistance here.
